Miguel & Miquelina (working in progress)

“Miguel & Miquelina” is an encounter between mother and son. Miguel Pereira and his mother, Miquelina, connect affectively through memory and its loss, caused by his mother’s dementia. Between a theater stage and ordinary life a space of invention is elaborated, and here Miguel finds a new position in his relationship with his mother. This space is a stage to explore the ludic relationship, to access another level of understanding that passes through the absurd and the laughable of his relationship with the world.

By portraying the daily life of the characters and the creative process of the play “Miquelina e Miguel”, where the performing technique focuses on Miguel narrating the facts of his mother’s life, an ethnography of this family relationship is traced. Where, by embedding the use of recent home movies and family archives, Miguel activates memories that go beyond the personal sphere and enters the territory of collective memory, marked by the political history of the colonial past that crosses his family.

“Miguel & Miquelina” é um encontro entre mãe e filho. Miguel Pereira e a sua mãe, Miquelina, conectam-se afetivamente através da memória e da sua perda, causada pela demência da mãe. Entre o palco de um teatro e a vida quotidiana é fabricado um espaço de invenção, onde Miguel encontra um novo lugar na sua relação com a mãe. Onde se tenta explorar também a relação lúdica, o aceder a outro patamar de entendimento que passa pelo absurdo e o risível da sua relação com o mundo.

Ao captar esse quotidiano dos personagens e o processo criativo do espectáculo “Miquelina e Miguel”, onde o dispositivo cénico se centra no Miguel a narrar os factos da vida da sua mãe, é traçada uma etnografia dessa relação familiar. Onde, ao incorporar o uso de filmes caseiros recentes e arquivo familiar, Miguel activa memórias que vão para além do espectro pessoal e passa a adentrar o território da memória coletiva, marcado pela história política do passado colonial que atravessa a sua família.
