Brazilian visual artist and documentarist. Through his work he has found a way to connect with otherness and to discover different worlds. His films have been shown in dozens of film festivals around the world, such as IDFA, San Sebastián, Visions du Réel, Biarritz, Jilhava, Havana IFF, Oberhausen, São Paulo Kinoforum, among many others. The film “Los niños lobo” (2020) was awarded as Best Film at FICUNAM (Mexico/2020), best direction at the Poitiers IFF (France/2020) and received the Jury Award at the XVI Panorama Coisa de Cinema (Brazil/2020). A retrospective of his work called “Descubriendo Otávio Almeida” was presented at the 20th Doc Buenos Aires in 2020.
As a photographer and visual artist, he was part of the audiovisual collective Estúdio Luzia (Brazil/2011-2015) and his artwork have been presented in many contemporary art venues, such as “Sem Número”, exhibited at the X Architecture Biennale of São Paulo (Brazil/2013); “Luz de Dentro” which integrated the 8th Paraty em Foco (Brazil/2012) and “Luz subterrânea” shown at the Kgaleria (Portugal/2012). In 2017 he received the RUMOS award from Itaú Cultural with the project Sentirgrafia, an investigation about the creative photographic process for people with visual disabilities. Almeida has also worked as director of photography in projects such “RUA!” directed by the Brazilian renowned artist Tata Amaral, and collaborated with several communication media, including Folha de São Paulo and UOL, besides creating video and photography content for several International NGOs working with environmental and social issues in urban spaces and in the Amazon rainforest, such as Greenpeace, Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), Canal Futura and Sesc TV.
Otavio Almeida is an IDFA Academy and the Opening Scenes Lab (Visions du Réel) alumni. He has graduated as a documentary filmmaker in the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV), in Cuba, and he is currently an Erasmus Mundus scholarship holder at the Docnomads Masters (Portugal/Hungary/Belgium). He also studied Social Communication and integrated the Contemporary Art Program (PAC) at Escola de Ar tes Visuais do Parque Lage (Brazil).

O filme "Los niños lobo" (2020) foi premiado como Melhor Filme na FICUNAM (México/2020), melhor direção na IFF de Poitiers (França/2020) e recebeu o Prêmio do Júri no XVI Panorama Coisa de Cinema (Brasil/2020). Uma retrospectiva de sua obra intitulada "Descubriendo Otávio Almeida" foi apresentada no 20º Doc Buenos Aires em 2020.
Como fotógrafo e artista visual, fez parte do coletivo audiovisual Estúdio Luzia (Brasil/2011-2015) e suas obras foram apresentadas em vários espaços da arte contemporânea, como "Sem Número” que exibido na X Bienal de Arquitetura de São Paulo (Brasil/2013); "Luz de Dentro" que integrou a 8ª Paraty em Foco (Brasil/2012) e "Luz subterrânea" exibida na Kgaleria (Portugal/2012). Em 2017 recebeu o prêmio RUMOS do Itaú Cultural com o projeto Sentirgrafia, uma investigação sobre o processo fotográfico criativo para pessoas com deficiência visual. Também trabalhou como diretor de fotografia em projetos como "RUA!" dirigido pela renomada artista brasileira Tata Amaral, e colaborou com diversos meios de comunicação, incluindo Folha de São Paulo, UOL, Sesc TV e Canal Futura, além de criar conteúdo de vídeo e fotografia para diversas ONGs internacionais que trabalham com questões ambientais e sociais em espaços urbanos e na floresta amazônica, como Greenpeace, Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), GPA Sustentabilidade, Guerreiros sem Armas, entre outros.
Graduado em direção de documentário no curso regular da Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV), em Cuba, e atualmente é bolsista Erasmus Mundus no Mestrado Docnomads (Portugal/Hungria/Bélgica). Foi participante do IDFA Academy e do Opening Scenes Lab (Visions du Réel). E também estudou Comunicação Social e integrou o Programa de Arte Contemporânea (PAC) na Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage (Brasil).
